ANSWERS TO FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
WHAT WILL MY BABY LEARN? A baby who is between 6 to12 months old will be taught to hold their breath upon entering the water then to roll back onto their backs from a face down position to attain a back float. The infant will learn to breathe and rest unassisted in a back float position until help arrives. Statistically, most children fall into a body of water unsupervised while fully clothed. Thus, your baby will eventually learn to perform the above-mentioned skills fully clothed in the controlled environment of my pool with Instructor supervision. You may expect a child to maintain these skills in a four-week period of time. Read What Your Child Will Learn
WHAT WILL MY CHILD LEARN? Any child who is between 1 to 6 years of age will learn to hold their breath and perform a swim-float-swim sequence. He or she will be taught to swim face down using coordinated arm and leg movements (propelling themselves through the water), roll on his or her back to float to rest and breathe, then flip themselves back over to their stomach to continue swimming until they reach the side of the pool and get out of the water. Your child will become an expert aquatic problem solver. After accomplishing their skills in their swimsuit, they will start a progression in their clothes. Typically, they will go through three days of clothing, starting with summer, then fall and finally winter. This additional work is crucial to survival swimming because most children who find themselves in the water alone are fully clothed. You may expect a child to maintain these skills in four to six weeks. The rate that your child learns these skills depends on what they have done in the water before they come to Infant Swimming Resource swim lessons. Read What Your Child Will Learn
WHY ARE “REFRESHER” LESSONS SO IMPORTANT? As your child’s body grows and they become more cognitively developed, they should “refresh” their skills. Adjustment lessons are needed periodically due to physical growth, which is a critical factor in any complex motor skill. Refresher lessons are for children who were taught the swim-float-swim sequence and have not been with an ISR Instructor for over 6 months, then come back to maintain that same skill. This process can take anywhere from 1 to 3 weeks; depending on the child’s ability, skill level and what they have done in the water since their last formal swimming lesson. If your child has been out of ISR lessons for a lot longer than 6 months and they are much older now, I can still get them to complete the swim-float-swim method again. It’s never too late to “refresh” your skills! :)
WHAT ARE “MAINTENANCE” LESSONS? These are lessons, usually 1 to 2 days in length, that are given to a student who was enrolled with me less than 6 months ago and needs part of the float or swim-float-swim sequence to be “fixed”. There is no charge for a day or two of instruction fixing the issue. However, if your child needs more time with me, the charge is at the same rate of lessons, which is $14.00 a day. Maintenance lessons are scheduled when and where my schedule has an open time slot.
